The Blue Ocean Slug (scientific name Glaucus atlanticus) is pelagic, meaning that it is found in the open sea and can be found in temperate or tropical waters. It has a gas-filled sac in its stomach, allowing it to float upside down at the surface of the water. Its coloring is an example of counter shading, which protects it from predators from all vantage points and the slug is hermaphroditic meaning that it has both male and female reproductive organs. G. antlanticus has an immunity to the poisonous nematocysts (stinging cells) of the Portuguese Man o’War and uses this immunity to consume the jellyfish, ingest the special stinging cells, and transport them to its own appendages for its own use.
